What do nursing assistants do

What do nursing assistants do

Nursing assistants relieve fear and discomfort by bringing good cheer and kindness to patients. Some nursing assistants also do clerical duties, such as filing and making appointments. Nursing assistants need to train and test from these approved programs to qualify to be listed on the Federal OBRA Registry as "active". Active status is required for a nursing assistant to work in a nursing home. Nursing assistants working in nursing facilities make up an estimated 24.7% (593,490) of the over 2.4 million paraprofessional workers. Since nursing assistants primarily provide hands-on assistance to clients with activities of daily living, they are key players in determining the quality of paid long-term care.

Nursing assistants hired to work in an assisted living facility, after completing 150 hours of instruction under this chapter, shall undergo a minimum 64 hours of orientation, at least 24 of which shall be clinical. While undergoing orientation, nursing assistants shall have direct physical contact with residents only while under the visual observation of a certified nursing assistant or licensed nurse employed by the facility. Nursing Assistants are on their feet most of the time. Much of the work is repetitious, but the many patients bring variety to the job.

Nursing assistants are the glue that hold everyone together. You will be truly assisting in everything, making things go more smoothly for the patients and your fellow staff alike. Nursing assistants provide as much as 90 percent of the direct care received by the elderly in the nursing home setting. Emphasizing the psychosocial skills that make the nursing assistant's job so important to the well being of nursing home residents, Geriatric Nursing Assistants collects and annotates the heretofore scattered references to nursing assistants and includes literature pertinent to the construction of models that improve nursing-assistant practice. Nursing assistants clean rooms and change beds. When patients must stay in bed, nursing assistants give them bed baths and change the bed linens afterward.

CNA’s are a vital part of a medical team, providing routine medical assistance to patients. Continuing education in this field may be paid for by Federal Workforce dollars and you may be eligible. CNAs can read each program on their own and treat the quizzes as open-book tests. Each program focuses on a different issue, such as caring for stroke patients or providing proper skin care (see the complete list below). CNAs possess important information about their patients' home environment and functional status. However, with limited training confined to performing tasks related to activities of daily living (bathing, feeding, etc.,) CNAs have little opportunity to inform the health care provider and less opportunity to support the patient's chronic disease team to improve the health of their patients.

Certification needs to be supported to enhance professional recognition. In addition it was argued that funding and support for gerontological nursing research must be increased to expand the knowledge base but demonstrate positive patient outcomes. Certified Nursing Assistants provide hands on care to those who are unable to care for themselves. This includes bathing, dressing, feeding and toileting patients, among other things.

Nursing Assistants are men and women of all ages and all backgrounds. All that is required is the physical and emotional ability to care for sick people.
